Title of Korean Journal of Medical Mycology (KJMM) is changed to Journal of Mycology and Infection (JMI).

KJMM was born in 1996, and grew up as the only medical mycology journal in Korea. We have made remarkable progress with the efforts of many seniors and members. KJMM is registered journal in Korean Research Foundation and Scopus.

Recently, KJMM is being challenged in the quality and the quantity of articles. There are few international citation opportunities due to articles written in Korean. For the improvement of the journal, there should be a virtuous circle structure where readers around the world can easily find our papers, increase the citation rate, and contribute a lot of articles.

The first goal is that the journal be listed in the international journal database. With recommendation of the Scopus, we turn into an English-only journal, and expand our aims and scope from Korea to the world and from medical mycology to mycology and infection.

Now, JMI takes the first footsteps. Please take care with love and help us become an important global journal.

Upon embarking of the Journal of Mycology and Infection

In the past, I had come cross a rather eccentric genre of animation where the lives of the deceased were turned into books and were kept in a library. As each on every one of their stories can perpetuate into different books, the level of variety and depth in the academic field is beyond numerous stories. A journal is a tool that brings all these stories aligned with scholastic value. I believe, the Journal of Mycology and Infection (JMI), with its own distinctive history, is a journal that has continuously developed and indulged many stories from its very first path.

The JMI, however, now stands to embark on becoming an internationally acknowledged journal distinguished by many authorities that share stories out into world. I stand on the verge of this moment and reminisce about the very first moment of its creation. Back in 1993, although fungal diseases were prevalent, the thirst of academic gathering has motivated many of passionate physicians and professors from dermatology, internal medicine, diagnostic medicine, microbiology and veterinary medicine to establish the Korean Society for Medical Mycology (KSMM). The Korean Journal of Medical Mycology (KJMM) was finalized in 1996 and starting with its first article 'Dermatophytosis and its causative agents in Korea' by professor Sun Bong Seo, the journal has well served its purpose in enhancing and archiving the academic merits of mycology, not only limited to Korea, but also including the USA, Europe, Japan, China and other Asian countries.

However, the dual language system of Korean and English had hindered a more privileged interaction among different countries. Moreover, in response to the earning for scarce academic mycology journals in Asia, the KJMM has been transformed as the Journal of Mycology & Infection, accepting only English submission, to provide opportunities for greater interactions in the field of mycology on a global scale. The journal additionally accepts exceptional articles in infectious diseases to supplement broader sophistication in the respective fields.

There were many obstacles to overcome before launching this newly reformed journal due to the various changes dealt in the publication industry. However, the engagement was doable with the unlimited support from the KSMM and the devoted efforts from the executive committee members. Especially I thank the editors and the peers for their invaluable contributions to make this happen and to Dr. Osung Kwon who has worked side by side in every effort. Lastly I would like to convey my sincerest gratitude to my wife Hyunyoung, my daughters Sangeun, Kyoungeun and to God for being there for me in every step of the way.

It is my great pleasure to the first publication of Journal of Mycology and Infection, official journal of Korean Society for Medical Mycology (KSMM).

KSMM was established in March, 1994 and has published the Korean Journal of Medical Mycology since 1996.

Fungal and other infections are recently increasing due to old age, diabetes, systemic steroid and antibiotic use, malignancy, and cell mediated immunodeficiency. Many world-renowned experts in the field of mycology and infection will share with us their research.

I hope Journal of Mycology and Infection will be a wonderful opportunity for you to expand your knowledge in the world.

Welcome to the first publication Journal of Mycology and Infection!

This is a historic moment - 'Journal of Medical Mycology and Infection' is going to publish the very first issue

I am very glad as the chairman of Korean Society for Medical Mycology and I thank executive directors, including the chief editor Jong Soo Choi, the managing director Yang Won Lee, and the publication director Joonsoo Park. Since our inception in 1994, we have grown consistently for more than 20 years and have been at the forefront of treatment and research in medical mycology. Meanwhile, we have not only tried to help our members continue their academic works and promote friendship, but also started publication of our own academic journal in December 1996 to impart exact knowledge about the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of fungal diseases.

While published four times a year, it had performed a great role as the only one journal of medical mycology in Korea. To ensure its internal stability and take a step forward to a better journal, we changed its official name from Korean to English, 'Korean Journal of Medical Mycology'. Thanks to our efforts, it has been registered to Scopus and sent to many societies of medical mycology around the world since 2016.

From March 2018, we would change its name to 'Journal of Medical Mycology and Infection' as a part of the efforts to make it an internationally leading journal in medical mycology. We will keep trying hard to do better in this field and look forward to your continuous interest. Thank you.

A Message from the Editor

With great pleasure I saw the thoroughly renovated Korean Journal of Medical Mycology and its renaming as Journal of Mycology and Infection.

The journal website makes a very professional impression. I am sure that the newly structured journal will become very significant, potentially attaining a strong position in the international literature. It will fill a gap in Asian mycology, where options for publication of mycological research are still somewhat limited, and the current structure also enables the journal to compete at a global level. To own such a journal is also profitable for Korean medical mycology, which certainly will be stimulated by this flagship for clinical and fundamental research.

We will announce the journal in ISHAM News, and draw your attention to the possibility to present the journal at the next ISHAM Congress in Amsterdam.
